Nasty Rhinoviruses, No Flu

By January 14, 2015February 21st, 2020No Comments

So far this winter, we have seen multiple patients with fairly severe upper respiratory illnesses, some with profound nasal congestion, cough, sore throat and some fever. One strain includes more sore throat with the congestion, another more cough and congestion but no sore throat. All test negative for influenza and appear to be particularly nasty rhinoviruses that may persist for a full two weeks or so. Be prepared. We can only offer good remediation and occasionally antibiotics if the virus appeared to produce a true bacterial sinusitis.

No Influenza as Yet

By contrast, even though we are supposed to be in the middle of the influenza season, and the flu appears to be serious, we have not tested anyone as yet positive for influenza A (too early for influenza B — that comes later in the spring). But please see us promptly if you get ill. We will test for influenza and give you Tamiflu if you are positive. That is most effective if given literally in the first day or two of illness.
